Bolt-On Mount Installation Guide

Line drawing of a Voltra Mounts bolt-on Mount with a DIY Dock, bolted to a 3x3 rack upright

Tall Upright, Compact Upright, Simple Upright, Oval, and Side Mount

This guide shows how to bolt a Voltra Mounts bolt-on Mount to your rack, where the DIY Dock can go, and how tight to make the bolts. Every bolt-on Mount goes on the same basic way: bolts pass through the Mount, the chafe pad, and your rack upright or crossmember, with washers and a nut on the back. The number of bolts depends on the Mount.

Bolts are not included with any bolt-on Mount. You will use the bolts your Mount calls for: the same diameter and thread as your rack's own hardware, and at least 1/2" longer (see the table below for each Mount). Longer bolts are your choice. A DIY Dock comes with your Mount only when you chose that option.
A chafe pad comes with every bolt-on Mount, including the Side Mount. It ships loose, not attached to the Mount. You place it between the Mount and your rack during install (Step 3).

Quick reference

Mount Bolt hole spacing (center to center) Bolt length (minimum) DIY Dock position
Tall Upright 6" At least 1/2" longer than your rack's existing bolts. With a Dock on the face of the plate, bolt head plus any washer under it: under 1/2" (12.7 mm). See Hardware height limit. Three possible mounting positions, but only two can be used at the same time: one Dock on the face of the plate between the bolts, and one on the 90° foot, either on top or underneath. The Mount can also be turned 180° and used in either direction. See Tall Upright Dock positions.
Compact Upright 2" or 4" (order the version that matches your rack) At least 1/2" longer than your rack's existing bolts Dock facing up or facing down
Simple Upright 6" At least 1/2" longer than your rack's existing bolts On the face of the plate, between the bolt holes
Oval 6" At least 1/2" longer than your rack's existing bolts. Bolt head plus any washer under it: under 1/2" (12.7 mm). See Hardware height limit. On the face of the plate, between the bolt holes. The VOLTRA I can be used in either direction.
Side Mount (Standard 3" or Deep 6 1/2" drop) Four holes, 2" on center, to bolt onto a crossmember or upright. Use the holes that line up with your rack. At least 1/2" longer than your rack's existing bolts Top or bottom of the plate. The Mount can be flipped 180°.

Every Mount above comes in a 1" or 5/8" hole size. Choose the one that matches the holes in your rack. Use a 5/8" bolt with the 5/8" hole option and a 1" bolt with the 1" hole option. Longer bolts than the minimums above are fine and are your choice. Not sure? See How to Measure Your Rack and Power Rack Hole Spacing Explained.

Bolt patterns for each bolt-on Mount: 6 inch for Tall Upright, Simple Upright, and Oval; 2 or 4 inch for Compact Upright; four holes 2 inches on center for Side Mount. Measure top edge to top edge.
Match the Mount's bolt pattern to the holes in your rack. To measure, go from the top edge of one hole to the top edge of the next hole the Mount will use. That equals center-to-center. Full steps: How to Measure Your Rack, Step 3.

What you need

Item Notes
Chafe pad (included) Comes with every bolt-on Mount, including the Side Mount. It ships loose, not attached.
Bolts The number of bolts depends on the Mount. Use a 5/8" bolt with the 5/8" hole option and a 1" bolt with the 1" hole option. Match your rack's own bolts for thread and grade, and make them at least as long as the minimum in the table above.
Nuts One per bolt. Use the same kind of nut your rack uses (a plain nut with a split lock washer, or a nylon-insert lock nut).
Flat washers One under each bolt head and one under each nut. On the Oval, and on the Tall Upright when a Dock is on the face of the plate, the bolt head plus the washer under it must be under 1/2" (12.7 mm). See Hardware height limit.
Split (lock) washers One under each nut, between the flat washer and the nut. Skip them only if you use nylon-insert lock nuts.
Two wrenches or a socket set Sized for your bolts. For example, Rogue lists a 15/16" socket for its 5/8" hardware, and Bells of Steel lists a 24 mm wrench for its M16 bolts.
Torque wrench (if your rack maker lists a number) For the Mount bolts, if your rack's manual gives a torque number. A small torque driver for the DIY Dock screws if you move the Dock.
Hex key Only if you move the DIY Dock. Use the size that fits your Dock screws.
Tape measure and level To check hole spacing and set the Mount straight.

How the bolt goes through

Side view of the bolt order: bolt head, flat washer, Mount plate, chafe pad, rack upright, flat washer, split lock washer, nut
Bolt head and the DIY Dock are on the Mount side. Washers and nut go on the back of the upright. On the Oval, and on the Tall Upright when a Dock is on the face of the plate, the bolt head plus the washer under it (parts 1 and 2) must be under 1/2" (12.7 mm).

From the VOLTRA I side to the back of your rack, the order is:

  1. Bolt head, on the Mount side
  2. Flat washer
  3. Mount plate
  4. Chafe pad, against the rack
  5. Rack upright or crossmember (the bolt passes through both walls)
  6. Flat washer
  7. Split (lock) washer (skip it if you use a nylon-insert lock nut)
  8. Nut

Hardware height limit: Oval, and Tall Upright with a Dock on the face

This limit applies only where the VOLTRA I attaches by a DIY Dock that sits between the bolt heads: the Oval, and the Tall Upright when a Dock is on the face of the plate. The hardware on the Mount side has to stay low so the VOLTRA I docks correctly. The Simple Upright does not have this limit, and neither does a Dock on the Tall Upright's foot.

The limit is the whole stack, not just the bolt head. If you use a washer under the bolt head, the bolt head and washer together must be under 1/2" (12.7 mm). Choose a bolt head and washer that stay under that height together.

Step-by-step installation

1Pick the spot and check the holes

Choose the height where you want the VOLTRA I. Find the rack holes that match your Mount's bolt pattern (see the table above). Measure from the top edge of one hole to the top edge of the next hole the Mount will use. That equals center-to-center and is usually more precise because you have a hard edge to land the tape on. See How to Measure Your Rack. Make sure nothing on the rack, such as J-cups, safeties, or a bench, will be in the way of the VOLTRA I or its cable.

On the Tall Upright with the Dock underneath, there is about 1 1/2" between the Mount and the side of the VOLTRA I.

2Set the DIY Dock where you want it (on the bench)

If your DIY Dock is already on the side you want, skip to Step 3. To move it to the other face of the plate:

  1. Remove the eight M4 screws that hold the Dock.
  2. Wipe both faces clean so the Dock sits flat.
  3. Place the Dock on the other face and line up all eight holes.
  4. Start all eight screws by hand from the opposite face.
  5. Tighten in a criss-cross order, in two or three passes, to a final 2.0 to 2.5 Nm (17.7 to 22.1 in-lb). This is Beyond Power's published DIY Dock torque. Do not go over 2.5 Nm.
Moving the DIY Dock: eight M4 screws in a criss-cross order, final 2.0 to 2.5 Nm

For more detail, see our DIY Dock Installation Instructions. Lost a screw? We carry M4 × 0.7 DIY Dock screws.

3Hold the Mount to the rack, chafe pad in between

Your Mount comes with a chafe pad. It ships loose, not attached, so place it by hand. The chafe pad goes between the Mount and the rack. It protects your rack's finish and, on flat-plate Mounts like the Oval, gives room for the DIY Dock screws behind the plate. The DIY Dock faces away from the rack, toward where the VOLTRA I will sit.

4Put the bolts in from the Mount side

Slide a flat washer onto each bolt. Push the bolts through the Mount, the chafe pad, and the rack. The bolt heads stay on the Mount side, next to the Dock.

On the Oval, and on the Tall Upright when a Dock is on the face of the plate, the bolt head plus the washer under it must be under 1/2" (12.7 mm) so the VOLTRA I docks correctly. See Hardware height limit.

5Add washers and nuts, hand-tight only

On the back of the rack, add a flat washer, then a split (lock) washer, then the nut, on each bolt. Turn the nuts by hand until they touch. Leave the Mount loose enough to adjust.

6Square it up, then tighten in passes

Set the Mount straight (use a level if you have one) and check that the chafe pad sits flat on the rack. Then tighten a little at a time, moving from bolt to bolt. Hold the bolt head still and turn the nut. See How tight should the bolts be? below.

Five tightening steps: start by hand, square it up, snug each bolt, final passes moving from bolt to bolt, check again

7Dock the VOLTRA I and do a light trial run

Seat the VOLTRA I on the DIY Dock. Start with a light pull in every direction you plan to train. The Mount should not shift or rock. If it does, stop and recheck the bolts and the Dock screws.

8Recheck after the first week

Coated parts can settle a little after they are first clamped, which can loosen a bolt. Check all the Mount bolts after your first week of use, then now and then after that, along with the rest of your rack hardware.

Tall Upright: Dock positions

There are three possible mounting positions, but only two can be used at the same time: one Dock on the face of the plate, between the bolts, and one on the 90° foot, either on top or underneath.

Tall Upright side view on a 3x3 upright showing three DIY Dock positions: on the face of the upright plate between the bolts, on top of the 90 degree foot, and underneath the foot. Only two can be used at the same time: 1 and 2, or 1 and 3.
  1. Face of the upright plate: the Dock sits on the front of the tall plate, between the bolts, facing away from the rack.
  2. Top of the 90° foot: the Dock faces up and the VOLTRA I sits above the foot.
  3. Underneath the 90° foot: the Dock faces down and the VOLTRA I sits below the foot.

Two at a time means 1 and 2, or 1 and 3. The foot takes one Dock, on top or underneath.

The Tall Upright can also be turned 180° and used in either direction.

Moving a Dock is easiest on the bench before the Mount goes on the rack (Step 2). The Compact Upright can have the Dock facing up or down, and the Side Mount can have the Dock on the top or bottom of the plate and be flipped 180°.

How tight should the bolts be?

Follow your rack maker's recommendation. If your rack's manual gives a torque number for its own bolts, use that number for your Mount bolts too.

If your rack maker does not publish a number, tighten in passes until the split lock washers are flat and the Mount does not move.

We do not publish our own torque number for rack bolts. Here is what rack makers publish in their own manuals. Follow the links to read them yourself.

What rack makers publish

Rack maker Rack bolt size What their manual says Source
Rogue Fitness 5/8" (Monster Lite, R-4); 1" (Monster upright to crossmember) Hand-tighten, then "fully tighten all hardware" once assembled. On the Fold Back Rack: "Tighten firmly but do not over-tighten." No torque number given. R-4, RML-390/490, RM-4, RML-3W Fold Back
REP Fitness Varies by model PR-5000: "Position rack and fully tighten all hardware." No torque number given. PR-5000 manual
Bells of Steel M16 (5/8") Hydra: hand-tighten first, then securely tighten all bolts; double-check before use and re-tighten regularly. No torque number given. Hydra Rack manual
Force USA M12 MyRack: tighten nuts and bolts by hand until the whole rack is assembled. No torque number given. MyRack manual
Titan Fitness M16 (T-3, X-3) T-3 and X-3 Bolt-Down: "make sure to tighten all nut-and-bolt combinations before use." Titan's help center: "We do not have any torque specs for our Power Racks. We suggest tightening the nut until its snug." No torque number given. T-3 manual, X-3 Bolt-Down manual, Titan help center
Eleiko M16 Prestera Power Rack: 40 Nm (about 30 ft-lb), tightened by hand, no power drill. XF-80 Light Rack: 60 Nm (about 44 ft-lb). Prestera manual, XF-80 manual

These numbers apply to those makers' own racks. If your rack is not listed, check your own rack's manual.

Do not over-tighten coated parts.
  • Use a flat washer under the bolt head and under the nut so the coating is not torn as you tighten.
  • Tighten by hand with a wrench or torque wrench. Do not use an impact driver.
  • Stop if you see the coating crack or the tube wall start to dish in.
  • Recheck after the first week, since coatings can settle a little after they are clamped.

Troubleshooting

Problem What to check
The bolts are too short Measure one of your rack's own bolts and add at least the length in the Quick reference table. The bolt needs to pass through the Mount, the chafe pad, the rack, both washers, and the full nut.
The holes do not line up Measure from the top edge of one hole to the top edge of the next (that equals center-to-center). The Tall Upright, Simple Upright, and Oval use 6" spacing. The Compact Upright comes in a 2" or 4" version. The Side Mount has four holes, 2" on center. See How to Measure Your Rack.
The bolt will not go through the Mount Check that the Mount's hole size (1" or 5/8") matches your rack. Use a 5/8" bolt with the 5/8" hole option and a 1" bolt with the 1" hole option.
The VOLTRA I will not seat on the Dock Check that all eight Dock screws are tight and the Dock sits flat. On the Oval, or a Tall Upright with a Dock on the face of the plate, check that each bolt head plus the washer under it is under 1/2" (12.7 mm).
The Mount shifts under load Retighten the bolts in passes. Check that the chafe pad is in place and flat against the rack, and the split lock washers are pressed flat.
